Solid Waste Management Planning
The development of practical and strategic waste management plans for large residential and working areas represents one of our original business concerns. The experience gained from these projects has formed a sound basis for our expansion into the areas of facility optimisation and design. By taking into account the socio-economic characteristics of each region, and the needs of specific groups, we develop practical solutions which can be implemented with the minimum of fuss.
TBU has prepared manuals for biowaste processing for the cities of Innsbruck and Melbourne and developed strategic waste plans for Ljubljana, Zagreb, Bangkok (biosolids) and areas in South Tyrol and Northern Italy. Sydney (LoWaste Strategy 2000 Olympics) was a landmark project. 2009 TBU was invited to the Review of Ireland´s Waste Management Policy.
In 1997, TBU was engaged by the World Bank to investigate the waste disposal arrangements in South East Anatolia and subsequently designed a network of transfer stations for upgrading the collection systems. 10 years later a similar project is performed on behalf of ADB Asian Development Bank in Sindh / Pakistan. In northern China TBU senior staff provided technical input to the Shenyang Urban Planning Project (~ 7 Million inhabitants). Other waste management planning / consulting currently takes place in Syria, and SE Europe. For the Bulgarian MoE a domestic waste prognosis tool was developed. In the course of the privatisation of the MSW services in Abu Dhabi (UAE), system weaknesses were identified, and the collection system and fleet evaluated.
Training Programmes
Technology transfer is one of our fastest business growth areas. In Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Turkey, China and the Arabian Gulf TBU has implemented training programmes for key waste industry decision-makers.
Optimisation of Waste Treatment
Another of our speciality areas is the provision of technical assistance and advice to improve & optimise the performance of residual waste treatment facilities. A key basis for this is the characterisation of the input waste stream, achieved using a mobile waste analysis unit. This in-house designed station is stored within a standard shipping container and can therefore be economically transported over long distances (road or sea).
TBU has developed methodologies and performed analyses of domestic waste from Istanbul, Zagreb, Milan, Vienna and several Austrian provinces.
The use of this specialist technology and know-how provided the basis for optimisation of the Bad Tölz Waste Centre in 1990. More recent examples include the identification of faults (provoking serious odour problems) at
- the Milan Biowaste Compost Facility (140 t/day)
- the Cascais MSW Treatment Plant, P (700 t/day)
- the Milan ´former Maserati´ facility (1,500 t/day)
which are amongst the largest plants in the world for composting biowaste / stabilising MSW.
From projects such as these, our original core business, we have developed the expertise necessary to move into...
Facility Design
One of our local reference projects includes the design of the electrical and mechanical aspects of the Hohenruppersdorf Materials Recovery Facility (Weinviertel region of Austria). This facility, in operation since 1990, processes source-separated domestic & commercial recyclables.
TBU recently undertook the design of a waste splitting plant (Schabs, South Tyrol), modifications to the RDF treatment facility Tolmezzo (north of Venice) which were successfully implemented in 1998 and the firm is designing a slag treatment system for the Bolzano MSW Incinerator (Italy).
”TBU is an organisation that provides sound professional advice, independent of any product and/or technology providers“ (A. Mösinger)
